In 1882 Mount Helena was deemed a timber town being home to a sawmill site before being abandoned in 1887 and from here is where the town site ‘Lion Mill’ began to grow.
In 1889 the town was taken over by Lion Timber, which lead to the towns name change, Lion Mill. In 1902 Ernest Forsyth, a man with an idea built and licensed a hotel right on the railway line. Little did he know this venue would be around more than 120 years later. The tavern was built using local timber and carpenters and opened it’s doors in September 1902 then known as The Lion Mill Hotel.
Years went by and in 1924 the townsite was renamed Mount Helena, which lead to the new name Mount Helena Hotel soon after.
Since then, the Mount Helena Tavern or known locally as ‘The Mounties’ as lot has change but, a lot has still stayed the same.
